human trafficking cases rise

Zanis-Immigration Department Director General JAPHET LISHOMWA has disclosed that the department recorded 1,172 cases of human trafficking across the country this year.

Dr. LISHOMWA is saddened with the development saying trafficking and smuggling of immigrants is being perpetrated by both foreign and Zambian nationals.

He explains that most of the people arrested in connection with human trafficking offences were from Muchinga and Eastern provinces while Copperbelt province recorded more child trafficking cases.

Meanwhile, Copperbelt Permanent Secretary, AUGUSTINE KASONGO says there is need for facilitation to enable immigration officers conduct routine checks in industrial areas of all towns in the province as some foreigners are working without proper documentation.
