High water levels have contributed to stable power generation

Patricia Banda-Energy Minister MATTHEW NKHUWA says the favourable rainfall the country has received has led to the reduction in Load shedding hours.

Mr. NKHUWA said this in a ministerial statement to parliament on the status of Load shedding in the country.

He noted that Load shedding is expected to reduce further this year when the Kafue Gorge Lower comes on board with 7 hundred and 50 megawatts of power.

Mr. NKHUWA said the Country has received good rainfall this season and that the water reserves now stands at 27-point 7 percent.

He said water levels in the reserves are expected to go beyond 30 percent by June this year.

Mr NKHUWA explained that the Kafue river is receiving more water from the Congo river and the case is not the same for Zambezi river.

He further explained that the energy act of 2019 will also allow liberalization of the energy sector for the private sector to come on board to compete with ZESCO.

And Mr NKHUWA said Government is still negotiating with Mozambique and South Africa on repayment of debt that ZESCO owes for buying power from the two countries.
