HICHILEMA CONCERNED OVER SOCIAL MEDIA ABUSE

By Brain  Mwale

President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA has called for an end to abuse of social media, early child marriages, teenage pregnancies, alcoholism and other behaviors that are contrary to national values and principles.

The Head of state says government will invoke the necessary laws to deal with culprits to deter would-be offenders.

He is concerned with the abuse of social media by citizens in propagating hate speech, cyber bullying and cyber crimes.

President HICHILEMA is saddened that people are using social media platforms to perpetuate hate speech, fake news, cyber crimes by enticing people to get non existing loans and circulation of obscene materials which is destroying the country’s morality.

Addressing Parliament on progress made in the application of National Values and Principles today, President HICHILEMA said citizens should instead use social media platforms to enhance interactions, democracy and business linkages.

He said government is determined to put an end to abuse of social media using the available legislation without any form of segregation.

And President HICHILEMA said child marriage and teen pregnancies have remained high.

He said a lot remains to be done as vices like alcohol and substance abuse, teenage pregnancies, Gender Based Violence and Corruption have continued.

The President however said government will prosecute people marrying off children including parents and guardians as part of ending the vice.
