By Masauso Mkwayaya

President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA has called on the Zambia Environmental Management Agency-ZEMA- to be efficient and approve environmental licenses for artisanal miners in the shortest possible time.

President HICHILEMA says Government is working to reduce the approval time for licenses to about 30-days.

He says artisanal miners should also ensure that they operate legally and promote environmental sustainability.

President HICHILEMA has also called on ZEMA not to be overbearing on investors but carry out their work professionally.

The President said this in Serenje when he met investors based in Central Province.

And a representative for artisanal miners, LLOYD NYIRENDA appealed to Government to look into the proposed electricity tariffs.

Mr. NYIRENDA said once the tariffs are increased, the mines will struggle to operate profitably as electricity make up about 15-percent of their expenses.

Earlier the President met 10 Chiefs from Central Province.

At the meeting the traditional leaders called on Government to come up with an incentive for them to receive fertiliser.

Central Province Council of Chiefs Chairperson Chief CHIBALE said Traditional Leaders need fertiliser so that they can engage in agricultue activities.

And President HICHILEMA said the request will be considered.

President HICHILEMA said Traditional Leaders need to engage in farming so that they can contribute to the country’s food security.

President HICHILEMA is this afternoon also expected to address a public meeting at Milima School ground in Serenje.
