HAIMBE CONFERS WITH WOOLLEY

 

Justice Minister MULAMBO HAIMBE has assured the British Government that the New Dawn administration remains committed to upholding the rule of law and promoting democracy.

Mr. HAIMBE says Government has since started making necessary legislative changes to laws such as the Electoral Commission Act, Electoral Process and the Public Order Acts.

He says currently, internal processes are under way and that his ministry is collecting submissions in order to align them to the aspirations of government and the people.

Mr. HAIMBE was speaking when British High Commissioner to Zambia NICHOLAS WOOLLEY paid a courtesy call on him.

He said the reforms will also include addressing bottlenecks that negatively impact freedom of assembly and the campaign environment.

Mr. HAIMBE further explained that government acknowledges the need to address issues regarding the regulation of political party funding and campaign financing.

And, Mr. WOOLLEY said the UK Government welcomes government’s efforts to promote democracy.

Mr. WOOLLEY said the continuous registration of voters that the Electoral Commission of Zambia -ECZ has embarked on is commendable.

He also welcomed the pronouncement by President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA that the death penalty will be abolished.
