Govt to establish drug fund

Effie Mphande-Health Minister SYLVIA MASEBO says the government will this year establish a Drug Fund under the Zambia Medicines and Medical Supplies Agency -ZAMMSA, which will mobilise money for the procurement of medicines for health facilities countrywide.

Ms. MASEBO says the Drug Fund will be funded through government, National Health Insurance Management Authority -NHIMA, cooperating partners and the private sector.

The Health Minister was speaking in an interview with ZNBC news in Samfya.

She is optimistic that the establishment of the Drug Fund will address the perennial shortage of medicines.

Ms. MASEBO said the government has set aside 3-point 2 billion kwacha in this year’s national budget for the procurement of drugs.

MEANWHILE Ms. MASEBO said the government is in the process of reforming ZAMMSA.

She said the formation of the new board is complete and that she will in a few days announce the members.

The Minister said once the ZAMMSA board is in place, it will advertise all the positions and that members of staff will be required to reapply.
