GOVT TO DRILL 50 BOREHOLES

By ZANIS:

The Government is this year expected to drill over 50 boreholes in Mpulungu District.

Mpulungu area Member of Parliament Leonard Mbao revealed that apart from drilling new boreholes, a number of old ones are also expected to be rehabilitated.

Mr. Mbao, who is also Northern Province Minister, says this is in a bid to increase access to clean and safe water among residents especially those living along the shores of Lake Tanganyika.

He notes that health facilities along the lake shores have continued to record high cases of water borne diseases due to unsafe water sources.

The Mpulungu lawmaker has revealed that government will also work on the road network to ease the movement of drilling equipment.

Mr. Mbao said this after visiting Chilumba and Namukale wards which are along the shores of Lake Tanganyika.

And, Myamba Village Headman Steven Simamba appealed to the government to prioritize the provision of safe water to his community.

He said residents have had no access to clean and safe water as the only borehole in the area is non functional.

Meanwhile, Boyd Kapumpe, a Community Health worker at Kawe Health post said diarrheal cases are prevalent at the facility due to lack of safe water.
