GOVT LAUNCHES VOLUNTEERS POLICY

By Masauso Mkwayaya

Government has launched the first ever National Volunteers Policy aimed at providing guidance on the management of volunteerism in Zambia.

Community Development and Social Services Minister DOREEN MWAMBA says the Policy is a strategy and legal framework of voluntary activities in Zambia.

Ms. MWAMBA says the Policy will also seek to standardize incentives for volunteers in the country regardless of which organization they are serving in.

The Minister said this during the official launch of the National Volunteer Policy in Lusaka today which coincides with the International Volunteers day being held under the theme “Solidarity through volunteerism.”

Speaking at the same event, United Nations Resident Coordinator BEATRICE MUTALI said the launch of the Policy is a landmark achievement because it creates a social contract that speaks to the needs of Volunteers and the Communities they serve.

Ms. MUTALI said the UN in Zambia has more than 100-volunteers and that the global organisation will support Zambia as it rolls out Policy supported volunteerism in the country.
