GOVT ENGAGES DRC OVER MAROONED TRUCKS AT KASUMBALESA

Government says it is engaging the Democratic Republic of Congo -DRC’s- to address the situation at Kasumbulesa where trucks have been marooned for about 2 months.

Commerce and Trade Minister CHIPOKA MULENGA says the problem is not arising from the Zambian side but the DRC.

Mr. MULENGA says all modalities are in place at the Zambian side to facilitate the smooth movement of traffic into the DRC.

He explains that among the issues that have led to the long queues of trucks is the late opening of the border on the DRC side.

Mr. MULENGA told ZNBC News that the other challenge is that DRC is charging 30 dollars per person for entry as a Covid charge and an extra 30 dollars when exiting that country.

He said government is equally concerned about the current situation because it is not only a health hazard for the truckers but also causes a security concern.

Mr. MULENGA said this situation is also affecting revenue collection not only for Zambia but also the DRC.

The Minister said his Ministry is working with Ministers from Local Government and Home Affairs and Internal Affairs to avert the challenges.

Mr. MULENGA has since urged the affected drivers to be calm as the two Governments handle the matter.
