Govt committed to addressing challenges facing autistic children

(ZANIS) Minister of Community Development and Social Services, DOREEN MWAMBA says government is committed to address challenges that autistic children face.

Ms. MWAMBA says to this effect, the government is rolling out various social protection initiatives such as Social Cash Transfer among others to help parents with autistic children cope up with their daily needs.

She said this in a speech read on her behalf by Community Development and Social Services Senior Social Welfare Officer, MAUREEN KUMWENDA during the commemorations to mark the beginning of the awareness month on autism in Lusaka.

She explained that cases related to autism have continued rising in Zambia, hence the need for everyone’s involvement to address it.

And National Autism Association of Zambia Chairperson, ANGELA YOMBWE called on Zambians to embrace autistic people as they are just like any other person.

Ms. YOMBWE also appealed to government to support the Autism Association of Zambia for them to be able to raise children with autism well.

She also appealed to the Ministry of Education to build schools for autistic children, in order to ensure that they access quality education.

This year’s autism theme is “awareness, understanding and acceptance moving from survival to thriving”.
