Govt calls for optimal ground water usage

Etambuyu Katota-Acting Water Development and Sanitation Minister SYLVIA MASEBO has called for appropriate management and utilization of ground water.

Ms. MASEBO says dependence on ground water is expected to increase due to the adverse effects of climate change and urbanization.

She says it is therefore important that this resource is protected as ground water has also become vulnerable to the indiscriminate disposal of waste.

Ms. MASEBO says government has further made significant strides to increase access to safe water and improving Sanitation services.

She was speaking during the commemoration of the World water day which is held on March 22 annually.

Ms. MASEBO who is also Chongwe Member of Parliament said there is a water shortage in Chongwe District which needs urgent attention.

She said the water shortage is likely to cause water borne diseases.

Ms. MASEBO said interventions are however being made as 10 boreholes will be commissioned soon.

And Lusaka Province Minister SHEAL MULYATA said the provincial administration will work closely with all stakeholders to protect ground water which supplements the attainment of social and economic development.

World Bank Country Manager SAHR KPUNDEH said the Bank is committed to supporting government’s efforts to increase access to water and improving Sanitation services.
