Govt assures Chiefs of food security

Lusaka Province Permanent Secretary, ROBERT KAMALATA has called on traditional Leaders in Luangwa District, to help government address effects of climate change.

Mr KAMALATA says traditional leaders need to advise their subjects to stop the indiscriminate cutting down of trees.

He says the cutting down of trees for charcoal, has contributed to the dry spell that the country is experiencing.

The Permanent Secretary was speaking when he and his counterpart from Defence, NORMAN CHIPAKUPAKU paid courtesy calls on Senior CHIEF MBURUMA and CHIEF MPHUKA in Luangwa District .

Mr KAMALATA said government is working hard to ensure that no one dies of hunger, due to the devastating impact of climate change on crops.

And Ministry of Defence Permanent Secretary, NORMAN CHIPAKUPAKU said among the interventions government is putting in place to cushion the situation, is to provide Zambia National Service (ZNS) mealie meal, not only in Luangwa District, but the country as a whole.

Mr CHIPAKUPAKU has since called on the traditional leaders to ensure that the mealie meal and maize are secured.

Meanwhile, SENIOR CHIEF MBURUMA has praised government for the measures being put in place to address the hunger situation.
