GOVT ADVISED TO REVISE CLAUSES ON HEALTH CONDITIONS

The Tropical Diseases Research Centre -TDRC- has proposed to the government to consider revising a clause under the Workers Fund Control Board -WFCB- which gives authority to employers to discharge a worker who tests positive to tuberculosis -TB-.

ZANIS reports that TDRC Executive Director GERSHOM CHONGWE says the clause is a barrier in combating the disease, as miners are hiding their status for fear of losing their jobs.

Speaking in an interview, Dr. CHONGWE stressed that if the clause is maintained, it has potential to increase the number of untreated patients and will negatively impact the country’s economic growth and work efficiency.

He said TB in the mines is among the occupational health diseases being experienced, due to poor ventilation underground and that the removal of the clause will improve health seeking behavior among the miners as they secure their jobs.

Dr. CHONGWE has expressed hope that the proposal will receive the urgent attention it deserves from the relevant authorities.
