FORMER CELL FOR HH RENOVATED

The Zambia Correctional Service has renovated and upgraded President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA’S former cell at the Mukobeko Maximum Security Prison.

The cell is now self-contained.

In the Isolation area where President HICHILEMA and his Senior Private Secretary WALLACE CHAKAWA spent the bulk of their 1-hundred and 27 days in incarceration, the room has been provided with a flushable toilet and a bed.

In April 2017, President HICHILEMA and five others including Mr. CHAKAWA, were arrested and charged with treason before being released through a nolle prosequi in August of that year.

Zambia Correctional Service Commissioner General FREDERICK CHILUKUTU says room four of the Isolation Area is like a national monument because President HICHILEMA and Mr. CHAKAWA spent time there, sleeping on the floor without access to a toilet.

Mr. CHILUKUTU says the room and others in the Isolation Area are now cleaner and habitable because his Command decided to give Mukobeko a better environment.

He adds that even Dormitory Two were President HICHILEMA spent a lot of time with over 100 other inmates, has also been supplied with new bunk beds and mattresses.

Speaking when Chief Government Spokesperson CHUSHI KASANDA toured the cells, Mr. CHILUKUTU said inmates no longer sleep on the floor in most dormitories because bunk beds are now being fabricated by inmates in the metal workshop at Mukobeko.

And Ms. KASANDA said the days President HICHILEMA spent at the Mukobeko Maximum Security Prison were difficult times for most people.

Ms. KASANDA, who is also Information and Media Minister, said it was difficult to visit President HICHILEMA at the time as the previous government put in place measures to stop visitors from accessing the then opposition leader.

She was impressed to see the cells transformed and made habitable.

In this year’s National Budget, government has allocated 40 million Kwacha for the transformation of the Correctional Service.

The Service is now renovating its facilities and buying 25,000 mattresses and making bunk beds for all its correctional facilities across the country.
