Experts deliberate possibility of booster jabs

By Sharon Kunda-Health Minister SYLVIA MASEBO says technical experts are actively deliberating on whether the country should procure COVID -19 booster vaccines to improve protection of citizens.

Ms. MASEBO says the government will provide policy recommendations in due course.

She says COVID 19 vaccines being procured currently are for the primary series of COVID 19 vaccination and that the main focus is to work towards the 70 percent population vaccine coverage.

The minister says procurement of vaccines to be used as booster doses will depend on the decision that will be made following the policy recommendations by the technical working team.

Ms. MASEBO explains that the decision whether or not to administer booster vaccines is a technical one which should be firmly based on evidence, taking into consideration individual risk groups, vaccine availability, disease burden and other critical factor such as vaccination coverage in the population.

The Health Minister said this in the National Assembly in response to an oral question by Chama North Member of Parliament YOTAM MTAYACHALO.
