EU to Continue Supporting Electoral Reforms

By Blessings Chibuye

The European Union -EU- says it will continue to support Zambia’s Electoral reforms.

EU Ambassador to Zambia KAROLINA STASIAK says the EU appreciates the efforts by Zambia in adopting long term strategic reforms and demonstrating that democracy can bring development for the people.

Ms STASIAK was speaking when the EU delegation presented the Final report of the Election follow up mission to Acting Foreign Affairs Minister MULAMBO HAIMBE

She noted progress made in two recommendations notably the adoption of Access to Information Act and Removal of criminal defamation of the President from the Penal code.

She further said the report will also be handed over to different stakeholders to discuss the progress made in electoral reforms and what still needs to be done before the 2026 Election and in a longer term to enhance the electoral process.

Meanwhile, Mr. HAIMBE said Government appreciates the number of steps that need to be undertaken in finalizing the recommendations that were made following the 2021 electoral process.

Mr HAIMBE, who is also Justice Minister, said the recommendations and observations include electoral violence and participation by interest groups in the election process.
