ENGINEERS CHALLENGED TO UP GAME

By Etambuyu Katota

Government has challenged engineers in the country to step up efforts in the execution of their duties.

Housing and Infrastructure Development Minister Vincent Mwale says it is disappointing that some infrastructure projects have to be redone even after an engineer has certified the projects.

Mr. Mwale says government is spending a lot of money on infrastructure projects and will not tolerate inefficiency from engineers.

He said this when the newly elected Engineering Institution of Zambia -EIZ- members paid a courtesy call on him at his office in Lusaka.

Mr. Mwale said the new members are expected to be on top of things because government has been let down previously.

He cited works on 5 roads that include Ngwerere and Lumumba that had to redone even after engineers certified the works as well done.

Mr. Mwale said government wants to see stiffer punishment on engineers who certify works that do not meet the required standard.

And EIZ President Abel Ng’andu assured that the newly elected members will take a different approach and work with government to ensure infrastructure projects are completed to required standards.

Mr. Ng’andu said EIZ has formed an ethics and integrity committee to ensure engineers found wanting are dealt with.
