Elephants destroy crops on disabled people’s farm

Angela Limwanya-Elephants have destroyed vegetable gardens at a farm in Livingstone being run by the Zambia Agency of Persons Living with Disabilities-ZAPD.

Linda Farm Center Farm Manager, KAPASTU SUNGA says for the past three weeks the elephants have been invading the vegetable gardens eating most of the produce.

Ms. SUNGA has explained that the farm had projected to make about thirty thousand kwacha by the end of the year from the vegetables that have been destroyed.

She has stated that the farm management has engaged the Department of National Parks and wildlife to send officers to the site but they have been told the department has no transport.

Ms. SUNGA has explained that the residents, most of whom are persons with disabilities, are forced to stay up late to guard the vegetables that have remained in the gardens.

She has appealed to well-wishers to help fence the gardens and put up mechanisms that will keep the animals away.

Efforts by ZNBC News to get a comment from the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Southern Region on the matter have proved futile.
