Elephant Kills Kazungula Woman

A thirty-two-year-old woman of Machenje Village in chief Mukuni’s area of Kazungula District has been killed by a lone elephant.

The incident brings to two people killed by elephants within a space of one week as a security guard believed to be in his 70s was also killed in Livingstone four days ago.

The latest victim, THREAZA SIMATA, who was in the company of her husband and a family friend at the time of the attack, was coming from a funeral within the village around 18:00 hours.

The husband, OLIVER SIKITI has said in an interview with ZNBC News that they only saw the elephant when it was already charging as it was dark.

Mr. SIKITI says he believes his wife was targeted because she was wearing white as compared to the others.

He says he failed to save his wife from the elephant and ran to seek help but when he returned with help, she was already dead.

And Village Headman, KAVAI MUNDILA is appealing to the Department of National Parks and Wildlife to help curb the elephant attacks in the area.

Mr. MUNDILA says the people of Machenje are living in fear of being killed by elephants that frequently visit the area.

Meanwhile, Njovu African Wildlife Conservation Manager, ANTHONY MUNZABWA says the human-elephant conflict has been a challenge in the area because the animals invade residential areas to feed.

Mr. MUNZABWA says his organisation will continue sensitizing the communities around the Mosi-oa-tunya national park to reduce conflicts.
