ECZ TOLD TO CONSULT ON ELECTRONIC VOTING

By Hector Simfukwe

The Governance, Elections, Advocacy, and Research Services -GEARS- Initiative has urged the Electoral Commission of Zambia -ECZ- to hold a national symposium for stakeholders’ input into the planned introduction of electronic voting and Diaspora voting.

GEARS Executive Director MACDONALD CHIPENZI says this should only be done when the Commission has completed consultations.

He says electronic voting will enhance democracy and citizens’ participation in national affairs.

Mr. CHIPENZI told ZNBC news that the national Symposium will help stakeholders validate the idea and avoid misunderstandings.

And Mr. CHIPENZI has advised the ECZ to follow the law and conduct continuous voter registration.

Yesterday, ECZ Chairperson ESAU CHULU during a courtesy call on President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA at State House said facilitating for electronic voting will be among the various processes the commission will undertake as part of the electoral reforms between no
and the 2026 general election.

Justice CHULU said other reforms to be undertaken include Diaspora voting and continuous voter registration.
