ECL’s  FIELD DAY

By Hector Simfukwe:

President Edgar Lungu says government wants every province to have a thriving agriculture sector which contributes to national development.

President Lungu says this will be done by promoting the use of technology and modern methods of farming.

The President says despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the Agriculture sectors has continued performing well.

President Lungu says the good performance of the sector is attributed to the hard work of various players such as farmers.

The President expressed happiness that the distribution of farming inputs for the 2021-2022 farming season is going well.

He says government will soon announce measures that have been taken to reduce the cost of doing business.

The President said this today during the launch of the National Field Day in Mpika District.

And President Lungu said field days are good because they allow farmers to meet other sector players.

Meanwhile, the President has directed the Food Reserve Agency to ensure that it enters the market early and buys maize from the farmers.

He said once FRA does this, farmers will not be tempted to sell their maize to exploitative brief case traders.

President Lungu also discouraged farmers from selling their fields to briefcase buyers.

During the meeting, the head of state also donated a tractor to the host farmer Lewis Mpundu and the Zambia National Farmers Union Mpika branch.

Speaking earlier, Agriculture Minister Michael Katambo thanked President Lungu for his commitment to grow the agriculture sector.

And Zambia National Farmers Union President Jarvis Zimba said districts with low yields should be taken to task.

Mr. Zimba said those who are employed to help farmers should be made to explain why their districts are recording low crop yields.

He said ZNFU will soon ask government to ban the importation of cooking oil, peanut butter and rice.

And Corteva Managing Director Samson Nyendwa said the agriculture sector is growing because of the good policies put in place by President Lungu.
