“DRY SPELL DUE TO DEFORESTATION,BUT RAIN IS ON THE WAY”

BY PRINCE CHIYUNI

The Zambia Meteorological Department says the dry weather spell the country is experiencing especially over the Southern parts is clear evidence of changes in the climatic conditions, due to deforestation.

Zambia Meteorological Department Director, EDSON NKONDE however noted that the the dry spell has not yet progressed into a drought.

Mr NKONDE has stated that during the 2021/2022 rainy season, about 12 tropical cyclones are expected to influence rainfall activities over Zambia, with heavy rainfall and wind conditions.

Mr NKONDE was speaking today in Lusaka, when he featured on ZNBC’s Update programme.

Meanwhile Mr NKONDE warned that the prolonged dry spells in some parts of the country poses a threat on farming activities.

Mr. NKONDE says the dry spell might also affect other economic sectors, whose activities are rain dependent.
