DR Congo MPs summon minister over Rwanda incursion

(BBC) Democratic Republic of Congo’s Defence Minister Gilbert Kabanda has been summoned by MPs to explain how Rwandan troops were able to cross the border.

He is expected to say “what measures have been taken so that such things do not happen again”, Goma-based Virunga Business Radio quoted an MP as saying.

On Monday, Rwandan troops crossed into the neighbouring country in the restive north-eastern Nord Kivu province, clashing with DR Congo soldiers near the border.

The UN-sponsored Radio Okapi said calm had returned to villages in Nyiragongo region following the incursion and residents of six villagers who had fled their homes had returned.

The Rwandan army said in a statement that its soldiers had been pursuing smugglers and unintentionally crossed into DR Congo.

It said the armies of the two nations maintained good relations.

Rwanda twice sent its troops into its much larger neighbour during the 1990s.
