DMMU RELOCATING 1,000 PEOPLE FROM THE BANKS OF KAFUE RIVER

The Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit -DMMU- in Mazabuka has started the relocation of over 1,000 people who have settled along the Kafue river banks.

This is in an effort to rescue them from the anticipated floods that are likely to affect the area as predicted by the Zambia Meteorological Department.

District Disaster Management Committee Chairperson Jane Chirwa said the move is meant to prevent damages, loss of life and property should the area get flooded.

Ms. Chirwa said with the efficient early warning systems in place, it is imperative to act before a calamity happens.

She said working with the council, land has been secured and those that will need help with building materials will be assisted by the office of the Vice President under the ‘Build Back Better’ project.

Ms. Chirwa who is also Mazabuka District Commissioner said her office working with the office of the DMMU Regional Coordinator has received 1,200 by 25kg bags of mealie meal for distribution to areas that may be affected by disasters.

She said other areas within the district that became impassable after heavy rains have also received the foodstuff that has been put on standby for any eventuality.

Meanwhile Mazabuka Town Council Chairperson Vincent Lilanda has thanked government for the timely distribution of washable face masks and other COVID-19 prevention materials to the district.

Mr. Lilanda said the move has helped the district not to have difficulties in reopening schools.
