DMMU Conducting Flood Assessments

The Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit -DMMU-  is conducting rapid assessments owing to floods being experienced in some parts of the country.DMMU Senior Communications Officer Racheal Chama says the current rain season has seen areas such as Mambwe, Lumezi, Mpulungu, Kasama, Gwembe and Chilubi face flash floods resulting in loss of crop and damage to infrastructure, among them bridges.Ms Chama says DMMU has since responded in the affected districts by providing required interventions.She has disclosed that the assessment conducted in Gwembe revealed that NO households were displaced due to the floods but that a number of bridges were damaged, including the Makoye bridge in Monze districtMs Chama says DMMU, Ministries of Defence and Infrastructure are currently working on modalities to ensure the damaged bridges are quickly replaced to prevent further disasters.And Ms Chama has told ZNBC News that a team will also soon be in Chilubi and Mushindamo districts to conduct a rapid assessment on households that have been displaced and bridges that have been damaged in the two districts due to flash floods.She said this is to enable the Unit come up with appropriate response measures to bring back normalcy in the district.The Zambia Meteorological Department has predicted heavy falls and flash floods in Solwezi, Mufumbwe, Kasempa, Mambwe, Nyimba, Chipata, Lundazi, Serenje, Chitambo, Mpika, Chama, Kabwe, Kapiri Mposhi, Chongwe, Kafue and Chikankata from today 21st to 25th Ja uary 2020.Ms Chama has since cautioned the communities in the highlighted districts to be on the look out for possible flooding and report to DMMU by calling 909 toll free number, for quick response in order to reduce the impact of the floods.She has further said the Ministry of Finance is currently mobilizing resources to ensure quick response to affected communities.
