DEGAZZETING OF KAMEZA FOREST OUTLAWED

By Musenge Mulimba:

Government has outlawed the degazzeting of Kameza Forest in Chililabombwe on the Copperbelt and ordered for the repossession of allocated land in the forest.

Meanwhile, government will re-examine the plots allocated to ex-miners in the Kameza Forest because the process was not backed by any legal decision.

Minister of Green Economy and Environment Collins Nzovu says degazetting land in Chililabombwe’s Kameza forest is illegal and should come to an end.

Mr Nzovu says whatever method was used to give land in the forest by the previous government was for political mileage.

The minister was speaking when he called on Chililabombwe District Commissioner Precious Njekwa.

Mr Nzovu said giving land in a forest should have technical backing as forests are ecologically sensitive.

And Chililabombwe District Commissioner Precious Njekwa said the encroachment has already started affecting the forest, with one stream drying up.

She said over three thousand hectares of land was given to some ex miners early this year.
