DEC seizes aircraft carrying gold, cash and guns

The Drug Enforcement Commission -DEC- has seized an aircraft carrying over $5m ,5 pistols and 602 pieces of suspected gold.

The other items found on the Global Express T7-WW aircraft include seven magazines, 1 hundred and 26 rounds of ammunition and equipment for measuring gold.

One Zambian has been detained for further investigation alongside 9 other foreign nationals who include six Egyptians, one Spanish and one Dutch.

The Commission has also seized another aircraft belonging to a local airline suspected to be linked to the aircraft that was carrying the seized items.

DEC Director General NASON BANDA has confirmed the development during a media briefing in Lusaka today.

Mr. BANDA said an operation was conducted at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport on Monday August, 14, 2023 by DEC and other law enforcement agencies after information was received that a chartered aircraft carrying dangerous goods had landed at the airpor
on August 13, 2023 at 19 hours.

Mr. BANDA said there are chances of detaining more Zambians in connection with the matter.

He said preliminary investigations have revealed that the aircraft flew from Cairo in Egypt and was headed for Zambia where the detained suspects were coming to conduct business.
