“DEBT RESTRICTING CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS”

By Chansa Kunda

Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development Minister CHARLES MILUPI says the current debt status has restricted government’s ability to carry out construction and rehabilitation of roads to bituminous standard.

Mr. MILUPI says with the current economic status, the country does not have enough resources to carry out road works.

He says this has also limited Government’s ability to borrow for the same infrastructure projects.

Mr. MILUPI says despite the status quo, Government will continue with the infrastructure agenda countrywide through a finance model under the Public Private Partnership -PPP-.

He says this is because Government cannot currently fund the construction of any infrastructure projects due to limited resources which has caused a huge debt burden inherited from the previous government.

Mr. MILUPI has explained that although some road projects such as the Chipata- Vubwi and the Chipata – Chadiza roads in Eastern Province need urgent attention as they are in a deplorable state.

The Minister says his office remains committed to rehabilitate all roads which are in a dilapidated state.

He has since directed the Road Development Agency -RDA- to ensure regular and planned maintenance programmes are re-introduced for roads to last for a long period

This is contained in a statement availed to ZNBC News by Public Relations Officer at the Ministry JEFF BANDA
