Chief Mukuni praises Free Education Policy

By Moombe Hamobola

Chief MUKUNI of Kazungula District says the free education policy is a catalyst to ending child marriages especially in rural areas.

Chief MUKUNI says parents now have no excuse to send their children into early marriage because education is free.

Chief MUKUNI has thanked government for introducing free education saying it is making the fight to end child marriages easier.

The Traditional Leader said this when UN Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Violence against Children, NAJAT MAALLA paid a courtesy call on him.

Meanwhile, Chief MUKUNI has called for strengthened ties through extended families as opposed to sending children to orphanages.

He argues that there are too many orphanages in Zambia where children have no opportunity to bond and acquire values that they can learn when they are with families.

And Dr.  MAALLA said traditional leaders have a huge role to play in ending violence against children especially child marriages.

Dr. MAALLA has since praised Chief MUKUNI for being a champion in ending child marriages in his chiefdom.
