Buffaloes ready for CAF Women’s Champions League after intensive work on the strikeforce

Zambian Champions, Green Buffaloes Women’s Football Club will this evening leave for Morocco ahead of the kickoff of the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Champions League on Saturday. 

The Zambia army sponsored outfit has been preparing for the tournament in the last few weeks doing intensive sessions and have now been declared ready by head coach Charles Haalubono.

Haalubono believes his side has done everything and are ready to compete at the continental showpiece. 

Haalubono has revealed that his team has been working on improving their conversion rate in front of goal as they missed too many chances at the COSAFA Women’s Champions League Zonal Qualifier. 

“The preparations are going on well, we have done everything now, I think we are ready,” Haalubono told the ZamFoot Crew.

“We have been working on scoring because during COSAFA we were missing a lot of chances.”

“We are confident, the girls have been producing results. We have no doubts. Our target is getting out of the group and moving from there.”

“They saw what happened at COSAFA, winning is not easy hence they can’t be complesancy,” he added. 

Haalubono has also confirmed that they have made a few additions to the team including Maweta Chilenga, Esther Siamfuko, Lilian Mwaba and Jessy Zulu.

“The thing we did is get more strikers , we need a few more , Natural finishers and what was left is bonding.”

Meanwhile defender Agness Musesa believes the team will deliver with the support from the fans.

“There is a lot of competition in the team. Everyone is ready, definitely we will deliver. We just want support from the fans. We have been training hard so that we can deliver,” Musesa told the ZamFoot Crew. 

Haalubono will look to players like the female Computer Ireen Lungu who has enjoyed an amazing year so far winning bronze at WAFCON and two cosafa gold medals in the last four months. 

Having won the COSAFA Women’s Champions League Zonal Qualifier golden boot, Lungu has set her sights on the top accolades at the continental showpiece. 

“The areas that we have been working on are the strikeforce, we want to utilize all the chances we get,” Lungu said. 

“The fans should expect good games. We will take each game as they come. I want to work hard to get the golden boot and be the player of the tournament.”

“The pressure is there but we just have to take each game seriously. Each and every group is tough , we just have to keep working hard so that we can top the group,” she added. 

Striker Hellen Chanda has promised to work hard and do her level best to help the team achieve their target of winning the trophy. 

“We are very much ready to win the tournament. We are working on the striking force and we want to score more goals. I will try my level best to score and help the team,” she said.

“Everyone is putting their level best. We want to bring the trophy to Zambia. The fans just have to believe in us and support us. We will do our best.”

Defender Lushomo Mweemba has been a valuable member of the Copper Queens squad since 2018 and believes her experience will play a big role at the tournament.

“We have prepared well, everyone is ready. We have worked a lot on scoring because where we are going we need goals,” she said. 

My experience will help the team and will motivate the young players. We are not intimidated by any team, we are ready. We want to bring it home.”

Green Buffaloes Women Football Club were drawn in Group A alongside AS FAR of Morocco, Simba Queens of Tanzania and Determine Girls of Liberia.

The COSAFA Champions will be battling for the grand prize of K6.3 million at the CAF Women’s Champions League.

The competition will kick-off on 30th October 2022 with the final scheduled for 13th November 2022.
