7 Die,15 Injured in Itezhi-Tezhi Accident

Seven people including a baby have died while 15 others have sustained injuries in an accident on the Itezhi-Tezhi-Mumbwa road in Itezhi-Tezhi district.The accident happened in the early hours of today, when a Hino truck, which was also carrying livestock, veered off the road and plunged into a dry stream.Itezhi-Tezhi District Commissioner, Hendrix Kaimana  has confirmed the accident to ZANIS, adding that the livestock on the truck at the time of the accident, included goats, pigs and chickens.And Police Spokesperson, Esther Katongo has identified the driver of the truck as Force Hamatai  aged 27, of Namubanga village, Chief Muchila’s area in Namwala district.Mrs. Katongo has explained that the driver failed to obey traffic signs placed on the road, which is under construction, and the vehicle plunged into a ditch, meant for construction of a bridge.In a statement availed to ZNBC news, Mrs. Katongo said among the deceased is the driver of the truck.Meanwhile the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit -DMMU- has assured the affected families that Government will take care of all funeral logistics to lessen the burden.DMMU National Coordinator, Chanda Kabwe said Provincial Permanent Secretaries and himself will ensure the remains of the deceased are transported to Namwala for burial once the families set the burial date. Mr. Kabwe has further urged the administration in the two provinces to quickly submit the budget for funeral logistics.He said it is unfortunate and saddening to lose seven lives, including a baby. Mr. Kabwe added that the DMMU will also ensure the admitted people in Itezhi-Tezhi and University Teaching hospital are well taken care of.He has since sent a message of condolence to the families.
