60 MILLERS APPLY FOR FRA MAIZE

BY PAUL SHALALA

Over 60 millers have applied for 152,000 metric tonnes of maize from the Food Reserve Agency -FRA-.

The millers have applied to benefit from the 250,000 metric tonnes of maize which FRA is offloading to millers countrywide in a bit to cushion the escalating price of mealie meal.

And Agriculture Minister REUBEN MTOLO says the applications are being processed and so far 75,000 metric tonnes has already been released by FRA.

Addressing the media in Lusaka today, Mr. MTOLO also announced that the Zambia National Service -ZNS- has also been given a target to mill and offload five thousand metric tonnes of mealie meal on the market.

He further reiterated that Zambia is food secure and there is no need for citizens to worry.

Mr. MTOLO also stated that surveillance on illegal exports of mealie meal has been heightened especially in border areas.

Meanwhile African Milling says mealie meal prices will soon stabilize now that the Food Reserve Agency -FRA- is supplying 250,000 metric tonnes of maize to millers.

African Milling General Manager JOMO MATULULU says his firm is now selling a 25-kilogram bag of mealie meal between 165 and 167 kwacha.

Mr. MATULULU says the release of maize by the FRA is helping his firm to supply mealie meal to all parts of Lusaka.
