$53m CEC Itimpi solar plant commissioned

President HAKAINDE HICHILEMA has commissioned the 60 megawatt Copperbelt Energy Corporation –CEC- Itimpi Solar Plant built at a cost of over 53 million United States dollars.

President HICHILEMA says the current effects of Climate change have called for diversification of the energy sector.

He says government is focused on improving the economy and requires more energy to run various sectors.

President HICHILEMA says the investment by CEC is a milestone in achieving diversification in the energy sector.

And Energy Minister PETER KAPALA says the solar plant is timely and significant in promotion of alternative energy as it will help cushion the power deficit in the country.

CEC Managing Director OWEN SILAVWE says the current drought is a wake-up call for energy sector players to work together to meet the power demand.

And CEC Board Chairperson LONDON MWAFULILWA says over one thousand jobs were created during the construction stage.
