53 YOUTH LUSAKA COOPERATIVES GET K18m

By Mary Kachepa-Government has empowered 53 youth cooperatives in Lusaka with 18 million kwacha.

The empowerment is part of the 470-million-kwacha multilateral youth empowerment programme which is being rolled out country wide after the launch by President EDGAR LUNGU on the Copperbelt on August 15th, 2020.

Youth, Sports and Child Development Minister EMMANUEL MULENGA says the various empowerment programmes demonstrate government’s commitment to addressing poverty, unemployment and inequality that the youths are currently experiencing.

Mr. MULENGA says government aims at improving the wellbeing and livelihoods of the young people, adding that there is no meaningful development that can be achieved in the country without the participation of young people.

Speaking during the ceremony to empower the beneficiaries in Lusaka today, Mr. MULENGA said government recognises that the youth are innovative and possess the energy and intellect to build the nation and change the economic landscape of the country.

Meanwhile, Lusaka Province Minister BOWMAN LUSAMBO urged the beneficiaries to ensure they put the money to good use and pay back for other youths to benefit.

Mr. LUSAMBO however expressed concern that the Lusaka province administration is delaying processing the over nine hundred applications with only 2 hundred processed so far.

And a beneficiary, NIKIWE MAIMISA who spoke on behalf of other youths said the young people are grateful to government for the empowerment which is the first of its kind.
