Over 5,000 condoms are distributed on a monthly basis at the Copperbelt University -CBU- main campus in Kitwe, which has about 15,000 students.

CBU Acting head of Public Health, CHARITY KAZIYA has told ZNBC news that condom distribution is meant to curb the spread of sexually transmitted infections which is high among students.

Ms KAZIYA says the distribution is conducted by 50 trained peer educators to allow for students to access condoms.

She says the University has noticed an increase in sexual activities which has led the public health office to open a youth friendly corner.

Ms KAZIYA says the friendly corner will help students with information on sexual and reproductive health.

Meanwhile, the CBU Public Health Department has also noticed an increase in the abuse of emergency contraceptives popularly known as morning after pills by students at the university.

And CBU Midwife, MATILDAH LUKWESA says the University is conducting door to door family planning services to help reduce the abuse of emergency contraceptives.
