33,000 VEHICLES LACK MATCHING RECORDS

By Wilson Mulinda-

The Zambia Revenue Authority -ZRA- working with the Road Transport and Safety Agency -RTSA has discovered that over 33,000 vehicles do not to have matching records of Customs clearance and are of interest to the authority.

ZRA Acting Corporate Communications Manager OLIVER NZALA says the data was discovered after the authority carried out an exercise to verify if motor vehicles registered at RTSA from January 1st, 2015 to October 31st, 2021 which are also registered on the ZR
Asycuda World had paid taxes.

Mr. NZALA says this may be due to wrongly captured details such as the chassis number or there was no clearance with Customs.

He says ZRA has invited all those who imported motor vehicles between the said dates to visit the ZRA website: www.zra.org.zm to check if their vehicle is of interest to the Authority.

Mr. NZALA told ZNBC news in an interview that if the taxpayer is sure that Customs clearance was done, they should scan and e-mail the Customs Clearance Certificate, RTSA registration book and any other documentation of the vehicle to ZRA for verification.

He said ZRA will analyse the records and give feedback to the taxpayer if the Authority accepts the submitted proof of Customs clearance and the records will be updated and the vehicle removed from the list.

Mr. NZALA said if the taxpayer has no proof of Customs clearance, then the vehicle is of interest to the Authority.

He said ZRA has set August 31, 2022 as the deadline to clear all the vehicles.

Mr. NZALA said the Authority will not charge penalties and interest for voluntary compliance but will engage in enforcement activities after the deadline to recover unpaid taxes or even forfeiture of the vehicle to the State.
