By Brian Mwale

Twenty three people died in road traffic accidents during this year’s Christmas holiday.

The 23 died in 22 fatal accidents out of the 197 road traffic accidents recorded during the Christmas holiday.

Deputy Police Public Relations Officer DANNY MWALE adds that 21 accidents were serious with 32 people having sustained serious injuries.

He says 41 were recorded as slight road traffic accidents in which 58 persons were slightly injured and 113 were recorded as damages only accidents.

Mr. MWALE has revealed that Lusaka Province recorded the highest number of road traffic accidents at 71 followed by Copperbelt Province with 33, Central recorded 20, Western Province 18 , Eastern province recorded 15 .

He says Muchinga Province had the least accidents at five.

Mr. MWALE says this year’s Christmas holiday shows an increase in road traffic accidents by 45 compared to the same period last year when 152 accidents were recorded with 17 deaths from 16 fatal accidents.

He attributes the increase in accidents to a reduction in compliance levels by most of road users.
