ZUPED WANTS PEACEFUL CAMPAIGNS

By Justine Akakulubelwa -Zambians for Unity, Peace and Development -ZUPED, has implored all political players to engage in peaceful campaigns ahead of next month’s General Election.

ZUPED President, RONNIE JERE, says it is important that political parties and their supporters do not engage in violence or electoral malpractice such as vandalizing campaign materials for their opponents.

Speaking at a press briefing in Livingstone today, Mr. JERE said the organisation has noted with sadness the harassment of police officers by cadres of a known political party, in one of the districts, barely 24 hours after full resumption of campaigns.

Mr. JERE has advised political parties to follow the laid down procedure, whenever they are aggrieved, as opposed to taking the law into their own hands.

He says this year’s General Election, should be the most peaceful ever held in Zambia, in honour of the First Republican President Dr. KENNETH KAUNDA, who was buried on Wednesday.

And Mr. JERE has praised President EDGAR LUNGU and the government for uniting the nation during the 21 days of national mourning.

He has also praised the Electoral Commission of Zambia – ECZ for being transparent in the way it has so far handled preparations for the general election.
