ZPPA TO CURB PROCUREMENT INFLATING

By Mary Kachepa

Zambia Public Procurement Authority -ZPPA- says it will in October 2021 start publishing market price index meant to curb inflating of prices in the procurement of public goods and services.

Authority Director General IDAH CHELLA says the quarterly market price index will help officers not to buy products beyond the recommended price.

And Mrs. CHELLA says public procurement expenditure for 2021 amounts to 120 billion Kwacha.

She says it is important to have transparency in the procurement of goods and services because it accounts for about fifteen percent of the country’s gross domestic product.

Mrs. CHELLA further says any public procurement above 50,000 Kwacha needs the approval of the attorney general before a contract is signed.

She was speaking when she featured on ZNBC’s Sunday Interview programme last evening.

Meanwhile Mrs. CHELLA revealed that it is not feasible for ZPPA to do physical Procurement audits in all public agencies with the current man power.

She said currently ZPPA only has physical presence in Lusaka region and is hoping to set up in the northern region when funds are available.
