ZNFU happy with FRA maize buying price

By Mwila Nsofu

The Zambia National Farmers Union -ZNFU-is happy with the K280 Food Reserve Agency -FRA- maize buying price per 50 kilogram bag.

ZNFU President, JERVIS ZIMBA says this signals the beginning of progression towards cost reflective pricing for maize in the country.

In a Statement to ZNBC News today, Mr. ZIMBA has noted that the FRA price will incentivise farmers to return to producing more maize for the national reserves.

He explained that price is a key factor when farmers are determining which commodity to venture in and produce.

Meanwhile, Mr. ZIMBA said it is unfortunate that FRA, will this year, not buy soya beans.

He said farmers were oriented, in the previous years, to grow soya beans, as part of smart agriculture techniques, but also as a cash crop.

Mr. ZIMBA said in the absence of the FRA on the crop market to buy soya beans, government should allow for regulated exports, so that farmers can find market for their harvest at favourable prices.
