ZCTU SPEAKS OUT ON INCREASED PROTESTS WITNESSED SINCE UPND FORMED GOVT

Following an upsurge in protests by various groups that have characterized the country since the UPND formed
Government, the Zambia Congress of Trade Unions –ZCTU- is urging aggrieved groups not to take for granted their freedom of expression and speech by protesting whenever aggrieved with their employers or management.
In recent weeks, the country has witnessed protests by University of Zambia students, Copperbelt University lecturers, workers at Mopani Copper Mines, unemployed doctors, employed teachers who are not on the payroll and Northern Technical College –NORTEC- workers among others.
ZCTU Secretary General Cosmas Mukuka in an interview with Phoenix News says workers should learn to exhaust social dialogue and interactions through collective bargaining as opposed to turning to the streets to air out their grievances.
Mr. Mukuka says the trend by workers to protest is unacceptable and has since implored employers and management at institutions not to be rigid when workers demand for improved working conditions, but hear them out and find solutions to their challenges.
