ZARI using AI to ID plant diseases

The Zambia Agriculture Research Institute ZARI says it has embraced innovative technologies in order to address the challenges posed by plant pests, diseases and climate change.

ZARI Senior Agriculture Research Officer MATTHIAS TEMBO says the Institute wants to upscale the utilization of the Plant Village application, which uses artificial intelligence for the detection and diagnosis of plant diseases among farmers.

Mr. TEMBO was speaking during an induction training workshop for Plant Village Zambia field technicians in Nchelenge district.

He said the Plant Village application will empower farmers with the ability to identify and diagnose diseases and pests affecting staple crops such as maize, cassava, and sweet potatoes.
