By Paul Shalala

The Zambian population has increased to 19.6 million.

This is according to the National Census of Population and Housing exercise, undertaken by the Zambia Statistical Agency, between August and September this year.

The 2022 census has indicated an increase of 6.5 million, since 2010, and a population growth rate of 3.4 percent per year.

Interim Statistician-General, MULENGA MUSEPA says of the 19 million people,10 million are female.

Lusaka province has the highest population at 3 million, followed by the Copperbelt with 2.7 million people, while Muchinga province has the least population at 918,000.

Speaking in Lusaka today, Mr. MUSEPA said North-Western province has experienced the largest population increase.

Meanwhile, Finance Minister, SITUMBEKO MUSOKOTWANE says the census results will be used as a benchmark for national planning and policy formulation.

Dr. MUSOKOTWANE has explained that the results of the census will help in sound decision-making and allocation of resources.

And speaking at the same event, Zambia Statistical Agency Board Chairman, CHARLES MPUNDU said the 2022 Census was the first ever to be done using digital tools.
