Zambia’s Electricity Generation Increases

Energy Minister David Mabumba has attributed the increase in power generation to improvements in waters levels in the reservoir dams of the power stations.

Mr. Mabumba has told a media briefing held in LusakMabumba Davida today that this has led to power stations such as Kafue Gorge increase power generation from 630 megawatts to 820 megawatts.

He says Kariba North Bank is currently generating an average of 380 megawatts against the installed capacity of 1, 800 megawatts.

Mr. Mabumba who was flanked by Chief Government Spokesperson Kampamba Mulenga told journalists that Victoria Falls power station is currently generating about 103 megawatts against the installed capacity of 108 megawatts, adding that small hydro power stations are only contributing a total of 15 megawatts.

He however, stated that the increase in power generation is still being complemented with another 75 megawatts of power imported from Karpowership.

Mr. Mabumba says this means that the country has continued to experience a daily power deficit of about 327 megawatts at peak times periods from 17:00hrs to 21:00hrs.

And Mr. Mabumba has disclosed that modalities for a smooth transition of the procurement of finished petroleum products from government to the private sector will commence on 1st July this year.
