Zambian Athletes Geared for All Africa Games

August 24, 2019August 24, 201911Joy Siatubi-The Zambian Athletics team has declared its readiness for the All Africa games.Coach Douglas Kalembo says there will be no excuses this time, as his athletes have received all the necessary support from government.Kalembo says the team is in Morocco to reap medals.He is hopeful that with the good preparations put up, his athletes will perform well during the games.The athletics calendar kicks off on Monday, August 26.And 200 meters national record holder, Sydney Siame says he expects nothing less than a finals appearance.Siame, who has been on an intensive training tour of Europe since June this year, says he has prepared adequately and is ready to deliver.Other athletes who will compete in the 100 meters individual, 400 meters and 1 by 400 meters relay include Kennedy Luchembe, Hellen Makumba and Rhoda Njovu.The rest are Lumeka Katundu, Agness Mazala and Suwilanji Mpondela,At the 2015 edition of the All Africa games, Zambia’s Kabange Mupopo reaped a Gold medal in the 400 meters race.Meanwhile,boxer Nkumbu Silungwe has stormed the quarter finals of the ongoing All Africa games.Silungwe beat Lesotho’s Moshoeshoe Mokhachane in the 69kg welterweight preliminary bout in Rabat, via a 4-1 unanimous point verdict.He will now face Djedoubom Idriss of the Democratic Republic of Congo in the last eight on Sunday.Also carrying Zambia’s hopes on Sunday in the quarter finals will be Mbachi Kaonga in the 81kg light heavyweight category.Mbachi is scheduled to meet Samed Shakul of Ghana.And Evaristo Mulenga could also qualify to the quarter finals, if he beats Tunisia’s Mhamdi Bilel today(Saturday).This will be in the 57kg featherweight category.
