Zambia U-20 Class of 2017: Where are they and what are they up to?

Zambia won it’s first-ever U-20 AFCON title in 2017 when they hosted the tournament at the National Heroes Stadium beating Senegal 2-0 in the final with goals from Patson Daka and Edward Chilufya.

The team also went on to reach the quarter-finals at the U-20 World Cup another first for a Zambian side.

The Beston Chambeshi tutored side was full of talent with the likes of Fashion Sakala, Edward Chilufya, Patson Daka, and Enock Mwepu but where are they now and what are they up to?

ZamFoot Crew now looks at the U-20 class of 2017 and what they have been up since that famous triumph.

Mangani Banda

The First Choice goalkeeper is still at MTN/FAZ Super League side Sensational Zanaco. He is a second choice goal minder to Toaster Nsabata.

Moses Nyondo


One half of the central defensive pairing, Nyondo was promoted to the senior Nkana side but game time has been hard to come by.

Prosper Chiluya


The left-back is currently at Kabwe Warriors but has moved around since that famous triumph and had stints in Cyprus and the USA.

Solomon Sakala

The captain of the side is still on the books of Zambia Super League Champions, Zesco United though he is not a starter and plays only a handful of games.

Shemmy Mayembe

The pacey right-back has moved to Europe after leaving Zesco United and has penned a three and half year deal with Ukrainian lower-tier side FK Chornomorets Odessa.

Boyd Musonda

The workaholic midfielder is currently clubless after leaving the Tunisian outfit Club Sportif Sfaxien for the second time.

Emmanuel Banda

Emmanuel Banda joined Swedish Champions Djurgadens IF in late February after leaving Belgian side KV Oostende.

The midfielder left Oostende five months before the end of his contract. He has now joined up with another Zambian in Edward Chilufya after parting ways with Fashion Sakala at Oostende.

Banda was lacking game time as KV Oostende hence the move as it is aimed at finding game time.

Edward Chilufya

The Mphande Youth product is on the books of Swedish outfit, Djurgårdens IF Fotbollsförening. Chilufya may make his debut in the UEFA Champions League after his side won the domestic league in Sweden.

Fashion Sakala


The ‘showman’ was an important player at the tournament and is currently on the books of KV Oostende.

Sakala is a key member of the KustBoys set up and is their top goalscorer this season with 8 goals and has also contributed 2 assists.

Enock Mwepu


The Computer is on the books UEFA Champions League campaigners, Redbull Salzburg.

Mwepu continues to show signs of improvement and is among Zambians best exports currently.

Patson Daka

The player of the tournament, Daka is in Austria with Mwepu at Salzburg and is on fire and one of the most happening players in the current Austrian Bundesliga season.

Daka has scored 17-goals in the Austrian Bundesliga and only Israeli forward Shon Weissman has scored more (20). Daka has scored a total of 20-goals in all competitions.

The 2017 CAF young player of the year also rides on a remarkable 9-assists in all competitions this season.

Samson Banda


The second choice goalkeeper is on the books of Zesco United but rarely makes the matchday squad.

Jim James Phiri


The third choice goalkeeper is on the books of the lower tier side Kitwe United.

Benson Chali

The cool and calm defender is on the books of Ndola based side, Forest Rangers.

Sydney Phiri

He is arguably the most improved player from the squad as he is currently having a fantastic season with Kabwe Warriors.

He was not the first choice defender in the Bola na Lesa squad but he is now a regular at Godfrey Ucar Chitalu Stadium making up the back four with Dominic Chanda, Derrick Mwansa and Zachariah Chilongoshi.

Chrispine Sakulanda

The son of celebrated Nkana legend Musole Sakulanda is on the books of Zambia Airforce sponsored side, Red Arrows.

He seems to finally be convincing coach Chisi Mbewe of his quality as he made the matchday squad and starting line up in the last few games before the league was postponed.

Harrison Musonda Chisala


The diminutive midfielder is on the books of twelve time Zambia Super League Champions, Nkana.

He is one of Nkana’s key players but for all his potential he is yet to blossom into the star everyone expected him to become.

Conlyde Luchanga

The ‘Golden Boy’ is on the books of Forest Rangers. After losing form at Lusaka Dynamos, an unsuccessful move to Power Dynamos, He seems to have finally found his home.

He is however yet to make a big impact at Fole Malembe.

Edward Tembo

The former City of Lusaka skipper is with Zesco United despite not having a lot of game time. He made a number of appearances but not enough for all his quality.

Kenneth Kalunga

The ‘Wonder Boy’ is on the books of Portuguese third division outfit Benfica Castelo Blanco.

He is slowly making his own mark and his reportedly on the radar of a number of Portuguese top tier football sides.

Mumba Mwape

The former Spain based midfielder is on the books of Napsa Stars.

He is however yet to make his debut for the Mohammed Fathi tutored outfit.
