Zambia is food secure – VEEP

By Mary Kachepa

Vice President MUTALE NALUMANGO says there is no looming hunger crisis in the country.

The Vice President says the country is food secure.

Mrs. NALUMANGO says the Food Reserve Agency- FRA – purchased 220,000 metric tonnes of maize.

Speaking in parliament today, the Vice President said government is aware of places where there might be lesser food because it has done a vulnerability assessment.

And Mrs. NALUMANGO said if any officer will be found to have deliberately omitted procedure that led to the cancellation of the fertiliser tender, they will be dealt with accordingly.

She was responding to Members of Parliament who wanted to know what action has been taken on the people that prepared the tender because the Zambia Public Procurement Authority – ZPPA- was part of the team that prepared it.

Meanwhile, Mrs. NALUMANGO said 40, 000 out of 62,000 households have been connected to power by ZESCO.

She said the remaining households will also be connected soon because ZESCO had a huge backlog.

Mrs. NALUMANGO said this in response to Bwacha Member of Parliament SYDNEY MUSHANGA who wanted to know when ZESCO will connect the over 30,000 Zambians who had paid for connection over a year ago.
