Zambia has enough ground water capacity-Water firm

Brian Mwale-A local Leading water and energy solutions firm has called on government to institute policy reforms that will support local capacity and expertise in sustainable ground water abstraction.

Davis & Shirtliff Country Managing Director JONATHAN MAINGA says the move will make it easier for Zambia to tap into groundwater resources to boost access to water for more households and reduce significantly frequent water shortages experienced in major towns.

Mr. MAINGA says Zambia has sufficient local technical know-how and access to affordable equipment to reduce the costs of accessing groundwater.

As Zambia joins the rest of the World to Celebrate World Water Day Tuesday, Mr. MAINGA says lack of access to nearby community water infrastructure has also increased the vulnerability of rural households to human-wildlife conflict and exposed users to risk of waterborne diseases.

He says historically, most of the equipment required to access groundwater resources in Zambia and across Africa has been prohibitively expensive.

And Mr. MAINGA has observed that promotion of solar pumping for groundwater extraction should be a key aspect of policy development by African governments when looking at sustainable groundwater use.

He said pumping using solar power, remote communities with no access to the main electric grid, are able to access groundwater resources.

Mr. MAINGA noted that creating an enabling environment for sustainable groundwater exploration will be the greatest gift from Government to Zambians as the globe marks World Water Day themed “Groundwater: Making the Invisible, Visible for the 2022 World Water Day celebrations.
