ZAMBIA, ANGOLA TO BE LINKED BY ROAD – MILUPI

By Hector Sifukwe

Government says it is dedicated to link Zambia and Angola through a road network.

Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development Minister CHARLES MILUPI says the road will stimulate trade between the two countries.

Mr. MILUPI is disappointed that despite Angola and Zambia sharing a long border, they do not have a link in form of a road or a railway line.

He said this at his office in Lusaka today when Angola’s Ambassador to Zambia, AZEVEDO XAVIER FRANCISCO paid a courtesy call on him.

Mr. MILUPI said his Ministry remains committed to develop all roads that can be used to access Angola such as the Kabompo to Chavuma, Kalabo to Sikongo, Matebele to Shangombo and Mwinilunga to Jimbe.

He said government through his Ministry is actively considering doing the road from a place called Tapo in Mongu via Kalabo to Sikongo up to the Angolan Border.

The minister further said a one stop border post is also being considered to be constructed at the Sikongo -Angola border.

Mr. MILUPI also revealed that he has met with the promoter of the North-West Rail Company, Former Vice President ENOCK KAVINDELE, who has updated him on how far the project has reached.

He said he intends to take up the matter so that there is also a railway link between Zambia and Angola.

And Mr. FRANCISCO urged Mr. MILUPI to revisit the memorandum of understanding which was signed by the previous government on constructing a road between Zambia and Angola.

He said Angola and Zambia enjoy warm and cordial relations which must be supported by developing a linkage in form of a road or rail line.

This is according to a statement issued to ZNBC news by Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development Public Relations Officer JEFF BANDA.
