Zambia among 26 Countries to participate in US’ AWE program

Zambia is among 26 pilot Countries Worldwide that will participate in the US Department of State Academy for Women Entrepreneurs program.

The AWE program, which is a White House-led Women’s Global Development and Prosperity initiative, aims to equip women with practical skills needed to create sustainable businesses and enterprises.

US embassy public affairs officer, Sean McIntosh has disclosed at a media briefing in Lusaka that under this program, a total of 100 women entrepreneurs in Zambia will be trained.

Mr. McIntosh says the US embassy is partnering with the Women’s Entrepreneurial Center of Resources, Education, Access, and Training for Economic Empowerment (WECREATE) Zambia and BongoHive to implement the program.

He states that with a US$30,000 grant, WECREATE-Zambia and BongoHive will conduct business training sessions for the 100 women entrepreneurs in Zambia in the course of 2019.

Speaking at the same briefing, WECREATE Zambia Executive Director Nambula Kachumi said the criteria of selecting participants will be based on their ability to use internet and basic computer skills.

And BongoHive co-founder and Director for entrepreneurship Simunza Muyangana has expressed optimism that the AWE program will enhance the business leadership of women in Zambia.
